A Trophy
Rhett Carlin | Fall 2023
Created using Rhino, Maya, Grasshopper, Cricut, and general
machinery. Materials used to create the deer head bust were
balsa, brass, and leather. The idea behind this project was to
create a “trophy” which represented masculinity in a way that did not preclude violence as an integral part of its creation. I began by creating a deer head model within Maya and Rhino. Then, by utlizing the grasshopper plugin within Rhino I was able to slice the model into respective layers, which could then be fed to a Cricut maker 3 which would cut the pieces out of balsa wood. After gluing the pieces together, I drilled holes in both the model and brass pieces, arranged and coupled the pieces together. Ears were cut out out of scrap leather, and all pieces were put together to create this bust. Magnets were then inset into the back of the panel for easy display.
